The Natural Selection of Good Staff

3848046325How often have I stayed up at night considering what a staff member said or how they acted? How to handle a situation? Even now after 30 years of employing people, I still get curve balls from new staff members. So what is the solution?

The solution is to really look after good staff members. Those who really work to care for your business are the ones you want to keep and care for. Unlike those who are only there for a wage packet and are in general, the ones that give you the heart ache I.E those who are honestly not worth the time and effort.

So how do you know the difference?

It’s simple. Look for the little things. E.g. Without asking, a staff member picks up some paper or litter, they care about the impression your company is giving. If they make a good suggestion that is worth considering, they have probably spent a lot of time on this idea and made the effort to present it to you – even if only verbally over a coffee.

These staff members are investing energy into your business, and in the end it is energy that makes the money. Whether it’s the energy given on a production line or the energy put into really good paperwork, or even looking at a problem and taking time out to bring a possible solution forward. These types of people are great staff.

How do you keep these good staff? Pay them well. Treat them well. Don’t just give them the minimum, give them more. RDO’s, Courses, any excuse for them to grow their skills and knowledge. Don’t be over testy on work performed, if someone is 15 minutes short of their 38 week? Pay the 38 hours and don’t quibble. If they need time off for a family issue – understand and don’t give a hard time. You reap what you sow, and a good boss reaps good staff.

A general rule of thumb is to not ask anyone to do anything that you are not prepared to do yourself.

Don’t be afraid to say goodbye to staff that are not good. Remember, one bad apple can spoil the rest.
For some staff members, if you give an inch they will take a mile. If you back down and give them the benefit of the doubt, let it be known in a gentle understated manner. This is above the norm but as a good staff member, you do appreciate them and are prepared to let this one go by. It is too easy for staff to think that if you let it go once you will do so again. No. Let it be known that this is special, and you are only doing this because they are good staff.

In the current climate of contracts, unemployment and higher living costs, job security is important. Make sure your good staff know that their job is secure. Be honest and open – even in bad times. Good staff will help you to get over the bad times and back in the good and give you a different take on the issues at hand.

You must realise that you are as much as part of the team as they are. Work together for the sake of your business.

If you do even a fraction of these things, you will attract, receive, and retain good staff. In turn, your business will grow exponentially.

One thing I would like to say is before getting more laptop memory, look into the machine directly into which it will be installed. In the event the machine is actually running Windows XP, for instance, the actual memory limit is 3.25GB. Setting up a lot more than this would just constitute just a waste. Make sure one’s mother board can handle the actual upgrade quantity, as well. Interesting blog post.

In simple terms, all the work you did in Joomla a programmer can copy and re apply in word press. So a good programmer should have a new wordpress site up for you with all your pages and post for an average site in about 5-8 hours. I suggest you leave this to those that do it every day.
